food happenings in the northern Hudson Valley – 2010

I love this time of year – not only does everyone have tomatoes (and zucchini) coming out of their ears, but everyone seems to be celebrating food.   Or maybe that’s how it looks through my food goggles .  Anyway…

It’s county fair time – opportunity to eat crazy fried things but also check out some great food exhibits.  Check out the vegetable exhibits, drink 4H milkshakes using Hudson Valley Fresh milk, eat some local chocolates…

On the completely other end of the spectrum, there are cooking classes at the Hawthorne Valley Farm Learning Center:  “The Locavore Way” Cooking classes with Chef Amy Cotler (who also writes on Rural Intelligence).  We missed the classes back in June and July but the next one is coming up quickly:

  • Class #3: The Locavore Way: Locavore Candlelight peak-of-the-season Locavores’ Supper – A Celebration of the Gifts of the Earth Saturday, August 21, 4-8pm (bring your sweetie to the dinner)
  • Class #4: The Locavore Way: Celebrate the Harvest Outdoor Farm Food Feast – On the Farm Outdoor Locavore Harvest Feast Saturday, September 5 (Labor Day weekend), 10am-2pm (family-style)

To register, contact Caroline Smialek at 518.672.7500 x105 or caroline AT hawthornevalleyfarm.org.

Can we say eating and drinking?  The Hudson Valley Wine & Food Festival is at the Dutchess County fairgrounds September 11th and 12th.

But even more local is the Taste of Hudson NY on Saturday, September 11, 2010 from 11am-2pm in the 200 block on Warren Street.

Will the Columbia County Farm Festival in Valatie happen again this year???  I missed the one last year and so wanted to go – I love Golden Harvest, and Core Vodka

Across the river in Saugerties, the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival happens September 25-26.  You’ve never seen so many garlic themed things (except, perhaps, in Gilroy…).  Garlic ice cream anyone?

Further down in the Hudson Valley, the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association will be holding the 2010 National Conference: “Biodynamics & the Future of Agriculture; Growing the Food Revolution” September 30 – October 3, 2010 in Chestnut Ridge, NY.  For more information go to http://www.biodynamics.com.

And, across the river the final event of the year is the International Pickle Festival in Rosendale, NY in late November.  Lots of good tasting along with the usual rather awful fair stuff.  Last year there was also a tea-making ceremony in one corner, which was rather random.  But yum!  Pickles!!!

Phew!
